Sleep Apnea Machines and Devices:  Know Your Options

While people with mild cases of sleep apnea merely requires to lose weight and/or avoid sleeping on their back, more severe cases may need assisted breathing devices or surgery to correct the problem. Here are some of the most common devices used totreat the symptoms of sleep apnea.

CPAP Auto and Bi-level Devices

Auto CPAP machines can automatically adjust over the course of the night once it detects that you require additional pressure to stabilize the airway. On the other hand, bi-level PAP machines deliver two different levels of pressure wherein the inspiratory pressure (pressure delivered upon inhalation) is higher than the expiratory pressure (pressure upon breathing out). This type of CPAP device is ideal for patients with severe apnea and/or patients who are non-compliant.

CPAP Masks

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) masks are considered as the most effective and widely used therapy for people with sleep apnea. Basically, CPAP masks keep the airway open during sleep by delivering air over the nose or over both the nose and mouth. CPAP masks come in various styles and sizes to suit your individual needs and face shape.

  • Nasal pillow masks. This device fits comfortably over the nasal passages to keep your field of vision clear. Nasal pillows are lightweight and unobtrusive, and are perfect for people who are not comfortable wearing masks that cover large areas of the face.

  • Nasal masks. Like nasal pillows, nasal masks have minimal design and allows for a clear field of vision. However, it provides slightly more coverage for your nose and has a higher air pressure setting.

  • Full face masks. These masks are ideal for people who have nasal obstruction or congestion and breathe mostly through their mouths.

CPAP Humidifiers

This device adds moisture and warmth to your CPAP airflow to prevent airway irritation that may lead to nasal congestion and dry nose and throat.
